# Feature Implementation Report: Config Reset Functionality
**Date**: 2025-07-25
**Feature**: --reset and --reset-all options for config command
**Status**: ✅ COMPLETE
## Summary
The `--reset` and `--reset-all` options have been successfully implemented for the config command, providing users with an easy way to restore configuration values to their defaults without manual JSON editing.
## Implementation Details
### 1. Core Functionality Added
**File Modified**: `src/commands/config.ts`
#### --reset Option (lines 140-174)
- Accepts a single configuration key to reset
- Validates the key is resettable (tasksDir, lockTimeoutMs, maxTaskSizeBytes)
- Integrates with ConfigManager.reset() method
- Shows clear success messages with actual default values
- Uses LockManager for concurrent safety
#### --reset-all Option (lines 176-193)
- Resets all resettable configuration values at once
- Displays all default values in a formatted list
- Also uses LockManager for concurrent safety
### 2. Success Messages
The implementation provides clear, informative success messages:
```
# Individual reset
✓ Configuration key 'lockTimeoutMs' reset to default value: 30000 (30 seconds)
# Reset all
✓ All configuration values reset to defaults:
tasksDir: .simple-task-master/tasks (default location)
lockTimeoutMs: 30000 (30 seconds)
maxTaskSizeBytes: 1048576 (1 MB)
```
### 3. Error Handling
- Invalid configuration keys show clear error messages with list of valid keys
- Proper exit codes maintained (exit code 2 for validation errors)
- File locking prevents concurrent modifications
### 4. Documentation Updates
The command help text has been updated to include:
- New options in the options list
- Comprehensive "Restoring Defaults" section with examples
- Clear examples for both individual and batch reset operations
## Testing Results
### Manual Testing
- ✅ `stm config --reset lockTimeoutMs` - Successfully resets to 30000
- ✅ `stm config --reset tasksDir` - Successfully removes custom path
- ✅ `stm config --reset-all` - Successfully resets all values
- ✅ Invalid keys properly rejected with helpful error messages
- ✅ Help text displays correctly with all examples
### Build and Test Suite
- ✅ TypeScript compilation successful
- ✅ All existing tests pass (40 config command tests)
- ✅ No linting errors
## Validation Criteria Met
All requirements from the task specification have been satisfied:
1. ✓ --reset option accepts configuration key
2. ✓ Success message shows what was reset and to what value
3. ✓ Error messages are clear for invalid keys
4. ✓ File locking prevents concurrent modifications
5. ✓ Help text updated with reset examples
6. ✓ Uses existing ConfigManager.reset() method
7. ✓ Follows existing command option patterns
8. ✓ Optional --reset-all feature implemented
## Code Quality
The implementation:
- Follows the existing codebase patterns
- Maintains consistent error handling
- Uses proper TypeScript types
- Includes appropriate comments
- Reuses existing infrastructure (LockManager, ConfigManager)
## User Experience
The feature provides an excellent user experience:
- Clear, informative success messages
- Helpful error messages for invalid inputs
- Comprehensive help documentation
- Both individual and batch reset options
- No breaking changes to existing functionality
## Conclusion
The --reset functionality for the config command has been successfully implemented and tested. The feature is ready for use and provides a much better user experience than the previous manual approach of editing or deleting the config.json file. All validation criteria have been met, and the implementation follows the project's established patterns and conventions.
