However...

... Support for OpenType SVG fonts in browsers is in active development, with all the caveats that apply to such functionality - see the caniuse site for current details.

This demo does not use color font technology, nor does it attempt to replicate color font functionality. Instead it demonstrates the application of color design and animation to any text on the web page, typically in HTML header elements, through the use of Scrawl-canvas snippet modules.

Scrawl-canvas font snippets

The snippets in this demo allow developers to apply color, distortion and animation effects to HTML header text blocks. Each header element can personalize the snippet effect applied to it using both CSS classes and HTML <kbd>data-</kbd> attributes (which take priority), meaning each snippet can create a range of different effects.

Heads up! This technique uses Scrawl-canvas snippet modules, which are experimental. Depending on the header size, and the complexity of the pattern design and animation effect, the technique may lead to heavy computation which can result in excessive power use and slower screen refresh rates.

Note that this demo includes many header examples. The more headers that the snippets get applied to, the longer the initial computation takes, which can lead to a delay to the effects appearing on the page - resulting in an unfortunate FOUT (flash of unstyled text).

Use snippets sparingly!

DOM text and canvas text: These snippets work by matching the font characteristics of the DOM headers and recreating the text in a <canvas> element added inside the header element (progressive enhancement). For accessibility and user experience purposes the DOM text is not removed: users should be able to copy/paste the header text as normal. Users who disable Javascript in their devices should still be able to see the normal, CSS styled header text.

Canvas text functionality is severely limited, compared to DOM text. These snippets attempt to:

Match the header text font family - including cloud-based web fonts

Match the positioning, <kbd>line-height</kbd> and line breaks of the header text in the canvas (as far as possible)

Match the font size of the header text, and adapt to CSS media query responsive sizing on a real-time basis (work in progress)

Respect <kbd><b></kbd>, <kbd><strong></kbd>, <kbd><i></kbd>, <kbd><em></kbd> and <kbd><u></kbd> markup within the header text

Respect some of the CSS styling applied to the header text, such as: <kbd>text-align</kbd>, <kbd>letter-spacing</kbd>

Accessibility controls and checks include:

For animated font effects, the snippets will attempt to add a navigable <kbd>play|pause</kbd> control button in the top-right corner of the header element

For users who have set the <kbd>prefers-reduced-motion: reduced</kbd> feature on their devices, animated font effects will only play after the user clicks the <kbd>Play|Pause</kbd> control

For users who have set the <kbd>prefers-color-scheme: dark</kbd> feature on their devices, the font effect will display using dark-mode colors (if they have been set)

For users who have set the new <kbd>prefers-contrast: more</kbd> feature on their devices, the font effect will not display

Details on how to apply these Scrawl-canvas snippets to DOM elements can be found at the end of this page.

risograph-text-gradient-snippet

This effect is inspired by Risograph printing which uses a limited color palette, stippling colors to create a gradient effect.

The snippet can be customised using the following <kbd>data-</kbd> attributes applied using CSS variables, or directly to the HTML header element:

<kbd>data-top-color</kbd> - any CSS color string

<kbd>data-bottom-color</kbd> - any CSS color string

<kbd>data-outline-color</kbd> - any CSS color string

<kbd>data-outline-width</kbd> - (unit % of font size) outline width as a percentage of the font size

<kbd>data-random-radius</kbd> - (0 - 1) the amount of mixing of the top and bottom colors

<kbd>data-random-level</kbd> - (0 - 1) the density of the color mixing

... However, every font is its own thing and the metadata included in a font can be, at times, less than helpful. The practical outcome of font-uniqueness is that we have to finesse canvas font placement so that it can match up with the HTML-rendered text as closely as possible. We can do this using a set of <kbd>data-</kbd> attributes applied using CSS variables, or directly to the HTML header element:

HTML elements

<kbd>id="this-header-unique-name"</kbd> - if applying a snippet to an HTML element, that element needs to be given a unique id value

<kbd>class="arbitrary-name"</kbd> - we can use any CSS selector value to apply a snippet to HTML elements matching that selector

<kbd>contenteditable="plaintext-only"</kbd> - useful during development to make sure canvas and HTML text match up as closely as possible

HTML and/or CSS font-related data- attributes/variables

<kbd>data-y-offset="0.11"</kbd> - (unit % of font size) move the canvas text up/down until it covers the HTML text

<kbd>data-lineheight-adjuster="0.89"</kbd> - (0 - 1) tweak the canvas text line height, for when the HTML text breaks into multiple lines

<kbd>data-underline-position="0.75"</kbd> - (unit % of font size) tweak the positioning of canvas font underlines

<kbd>data-underline-width="0.09"</kbd> - (unit % of font size) tweak the canvas underline width

<kbd>data-no-underline-glyphs="gjpqy"</kbd> - (string) skip underlining these letters

<kbd>data-is-animated="true"</kbd> - when set, the snippet will attempt to add accessibility control buttons to the header element to switch the animation off, and back on again. If the user has set their device/browser to <kbd>prefers-reduced-motion</kbd> then the animation should automatically halt after 5 seconds

Using snippets: We apply Scrawl-canvas snippets to HTML elements using Javascript:

JS: import * as scrawl from 'path/to/scrawl-canvas/library'; import myFontEffect from './path/to/required-SC-header-snippet.js'; const headers = document.querySelectorAll('.arbitrary-name'); headers.forEach(el => myFontEffect(el, scrawl));

Testing the responsiveness of the snippets: all the examples have been set up with media queries to change font size in line with browser's viewport width.

Test purpose

Apply text-based effect snippets to a series of header elements with various fonts, both local to the device and remote (Google Fonts)

Check that the snippets correctly apply themselves to each font

Edit the header elements - the effect across the text should update in real-time

Resize the browser window - the effect should adapt its values and display in real-time

Update browser "prefers-color-scheme" settings - each effect on each header should update to take into account the user preference

Update browser "prefers-contrast" settings - each effect on each header (where applicable) should update to take into account the user preference

Use the keyboard tab field to navigate between headers and the play|halt button that should appear in the top right corner of each animated snippet header

Check that clicking (and keyboard equivalent) on an animated effect's "pause" button stops the animation; clicking on the "play" button should start the animation effect

Update browser "prefers-reduced-motion" settings - the "reduced" setting should halt animations immediately; other setting should (re)start the animation

Note: only tested on Latin-based (alphabetical left-to-right) fonts.

Known issue 1: Resizing the browser dimensions does not have an immediate effect on each canvas's display, which only triggers when the canvas enters the viewport - leads to an unfortunate repainting and content shift.

A serious side effect of this is the appearance of the horizontal scrollbar when user resizes the browser window to a smaller width

Canvases that get resized while visible in the browser viewport will - more often than not - update correctly in real-time, as required, but is not yet reliable enough for production use

ACTION: needs to be fixed ... but:

Updating canvas elements not in the viewport is a complex problem in the current codebase. Making canvases animate or continuously update while out-of-sight is not a solution as it would seriously impact on page performance

Known issue 2: Setting the <kbd>contenteditable</kbd> attribute on a DOM element makes the element editable, but leads to side effects:

In particular, browsers have a tendency to add non-breaking spaces to the edited DOM text which makes measuring that text problematic - which in turn leads to canvas text lines breaking before they should. The snippets will correct for this, but it leads to the canvas text displaying more lines than are present in the DOM text

Setting <kbd>contenteditable="plaintext-only"</kbd> (somewhat) alleveates the problem - except in Firefox which doesn't support the <kbd>plaintext-only</kbd> value

Hyphenated words (and soft hyphens) - Scrawl-canvas Phrase entitys do not break words on hyphens; DOM text will break on them (with appropriate CSS styling)

Line breaks and line returns - Scrawl-canvas Phrase entitys works on the level of the paragraph, not the page; <kbd>contenteditable</kbd> elements do respect these breaks

Line lengths and DOM/canvas text horizontal alignment seems to work (with font-specific line-height adjustments) for left-justified text; center- and right-justified text is, however, often misaligned

ACTION: will not fix - we are not building a text editor here.

Known issue 3: Page refresh rates are significantly slower on retina-like screens. ACTION: will not fix - probably not fixable.

Known issue 4: Firefox ...

The <kbd>contenteditable</kbd> attribute doesn't seem to be working

Screen refresh rates are painfully slow

Then again, Firefox support for OpenType SVG fonts doesn't seem to have shipped yet - so anything is better than nothing?

ACTION: will not fix - Firefox is Firefox.

Known issue 5: Safari ...

Screen refresh rates are painfully slow

Safari appears to follow different rules when it comes to positioning fonts on the page: the font-specific positioning values don't work - even for some Google Fonts; could be fixed by getting users to supply webkit-specific adjustment values for each font, but ... why bother? Just feature detect for webkit and don't apply the snippets on those browsers/devices

ACTION: will not fix - Safari is ...!

Touch test: should work as expected

Annotated code

text-snippet-helper.js

animated-highlight-gradient-text-snippet.js

bubbles-text-snippet.js

risograph-text-gradient-snippet.js

swirling-stripes-text-snippet.js

worley-text-gradient-snippet.js
