# Meld Debugging Tools Implementation Handoff ## Current Implementation Status We've made significant progress implementing the enhanced state debugging tools, completing Phase 1 (Variable Resolution Tracking) and making substantial progress on Phase 2 (Context Boundary Visualization). ### Phase 1: Focused Variable Resolution Tracking ✅ COMPLETED 1. **Enhanced `ImportDirectiveHandler` implementation**: - Added robust try-catch blocks around all calls to `getCurrentFilePath` - Fixed `parseImportList` to handle null/undefined import lists - Added safe context boundary and variable crossing tracking - Implemented conditional execution to ensure zero impact when debugging is disabled 2. **Documentation**: - Updated `enhanced-state-debugging-tools.md` to reflect progress - Enhanced `DEBUG.md` to document the context boundary tracking features - Created a comprehensive CLI interface documentation ### Phase 2: Context Boundary Visualization 🟡 IN PROGRESS 1. **Foundational Tracking**: - Successfully implemented state parent-child relationship tracking - Added variable crossing tracking between contexts - Established the infrastructure for visualization with dependency injection 2. **Remaining Tasks**: - Fix test failures related to transformation mode - Restore circular import detection - Implement visualization components - Connect tracking data to visualization rendering These changes have reduced test failures from 33 to 27, but there are still issues that need to be addressed. ### Current Test Failures The remaining failures fall into these categories: #### 1. ImportDirectiveHandler Transformation Test Failures These failures in `services/pipeline/DirectiveService/handlers/execution/ImportDirectiveHandler.transformation.test.ts` are related to the state object comparison and replacement node generation: ``` FAIL services/pipeline/DirectiveService/handlers/execution/ImportDirectiveHandler.transformation.test.ts > ImportDirectiveHandler Transformation > transformation behavior > should return empty text node when transformation enabled AssertionError: expected { setTextVar: [Function spy], …(15) } to be { setTextVar: [Function spy], …(14) } ``` The test is failing because the state object has a `mergeChildState` method that wasn't in the expected state object. This suggests our mock objects need updating. #### 2. Circular Import Detection Issues Multiple test files have failures related to circular import detection: ``` FAIL services/pipeline/DirectiveService/DirectiveService.test.ts > DirectiveService > Directive processing > Import directives > should detect circular imports AssertionError: promise resolved "StateService{ …(5) }" instead of rejecting ``` ``` FAIL services/pipeline/InterpreterService/InterpreterService.integration.test.ts > InterpreterService Integration > Error handling > handles circular imports Error: Should have thrown error ``` The changes to `ImportDirectiveHandler` may have altered how circular imports are detected or handled, especially in transformation mode. #### 3. API Integration Test Failures Multiple failures in `api/integration.test.ts` related to variable resolution across imports: ``` FAIL api/integration.test.ts > API Integration Tests > Import Handling > should handle simple imports AssertionError: expected undefined to be 'Imported content' // Object.is equality ``` These suggest that variables aren't being properly transferred across context boundaries. ## Suggested Focus Areas For the next phase of work, you should focus on: 1. **Fixing transformation mode behavior**: - In `ImportDirectiveHandler`, ensure the `replacement` node is properly generated in transformation mode - Fix the state comparison in transformation tests to account for the `mergeChildState` method 2. **Restoring circular import detection**: - Review how circular imports are detected and ensure errors are properly thrown - Check if the transformation mode is suppressing errors that should be propagated 3. **Ensuring variable propagation across contexts**: - Fix the variable resolution across context boundaries - Verify that imported variables are correctly accessible in the target state 4. **Implementing visualization components**: - Create context hierarchy visualization that uses the tracking data - Develop variable propagation visualization - Build resolution path timeline visualization ## Testing Strategy To validate your fixes: 1. Start by running the specific failing tests: ```bash npx vitest run ImportDirectiveHandler.transformation.test.ts ``` 2. Then test the circular import handling: ```bash npx vitest run services/pipeline/DirectiveService/DirectiveService.test.ts -t "should detect circular imports" ``` 3. Finally, run the API integration tests: ```bash npx vitest run api/integration.test.ts ``` 4. Only after fixing these specific issues, run the full test suite again. ## Code Areas to Examine 1. **`ImportDirectiveHandler.ts`** - Look closely at: - The `execute` method's handling of transformation mode - Error propagation with `DirectiveResult` objects - How circular import errors are processed 2. **`ImportDirectiveHandler.transformation.test.ts`** - Pay attention to: - State mock objects and their properties - Expected vs actual result structures 3. **`CircularityService`** - Examine: - How circular imports are detected - How errors are propagated to callers 4. **`StateVisualizationService`** - Look at: - The visualization generation methods - How they use tracking data from `StateTrackingService` Remember that the goal is to maintain robust context boundary tracking while ensuring all existing functionality (like circular import detection) continues to work correctly, and to implement the visualization components to complete Phase 2. ## Notes on Linter Errors There are some TypeScript errors in the test files related to mocked methods: ``` Property 'mockResolvedValue' does not exist on type '(filePath: string) => Promise<boolean>'. ``` These can be fixed by properly typing the mock implementations or using type assertions where necessary.
