# Meld Shipping Plan ## Overview This document outlines our strategic plan for completing the Meld implementation and shipping a production-ready version. We currently have 645 passing tests and 57 failing tests, with several known issues documented in our planning files. Our primary measure of success is the API integration tests proving we can properly parse and build correct output from real-world Meld files. ## Strategic Approach Our approach is organized into phases that build upon each other, with a focus on addressing fundamental issues first. Each phase includes a plan review component to ensure we adapt to newly discovered issues. ## Phase 1: Foundation Repair (3-4 days) **Goal**: Fix the most critical infrastructure issues related to path parsing and AST handling that are causing test failures. ### 1.1 Path Resolution and Parsing (COMPLETE) **Tasks**: - ✅ Fix the structured path format transition issues in ResolutionService - ✅ Ensure proper handling of special path variables ($PROJECTPATH, $HOMEPATH, $., $~) - ✅ Correct property name mismatches between AST nodes and validator expectations - ✅ Update PathDirectiveHandler to properly handle the StructuredPath object format - ✅ Update PathDirectiveValidator to align with expected test formats **Progress Notes**: - Successfully fixed PathDirectiveHandler test failures by improving error handling - Updated handlers to work with structured path objects - Added proper type handling for StructuredPath format - Fixed path resolution issues in ResolutionService with implementation of `resolveStructuredPath` method - Added proper handling of special path variables in `resolveInContext` - Updated VariableReferenceResolver to properly handle PathVar nodes and structured paths - Added proper error location handling in path validation errors - ✅ Fixed path-related test failures in PathService.tmp.test.ts by updating test expectations - ✅ Fixed API integration test failures for path validation by updating expected error messages - Multiple integration tests are still failing with path-related errors - 🔄 TextVar and DataVar resolution still needs work - Path variables now resolve correctly in different contexts - Path directive validation works consistently - ✅ Fixed inconsistent error messages between path validators - ✅ Updated tests to expect parser-based error messages when appropriate - ✅ Standardized error message format between PathService and parser validation - ✅ Resolved error location handling in PathService so that location information is properly included in errors **Success Criteria**: - ✅ PathDirectiveHandler tests pass - ✅ Fix path-related failures in PathService tests - ✅ Fix variable resolution in ResolutionService tests - ✅ Ensure path variables resolve correctly in all different contexts - 🔄 Path operations should not be a blocking issue for API integration tests passing (it's not expected we can pass all API tests yet) - ✅ Path variables resolve correctly in different contexts - ✅ Path directive validation works consistently ### 1.2 AST Integration and Service Architecture (1-2 days) - ✅ COMPLETE **Tasks**: - ✅ Enforce ParserService as the sole interface to meld-ast (Remove direct meld-ast imports from other services) - ✅ NO REGEX - use meld-ast in tests - ✅ Remove custom code fence validation regex in favor of AST properties - ✅ Update ContentResolver to leverage AST node properties - ✅ Implement the most critical parts of Phase 1 from PLAN-REGEX.md - 🔄 Update ValidationService tests to align with new error messaging expectations - 🔄 Fix error message tests to be more resilient to message changes using error testing utilities - ✅ Fix failing tests for nested code fences and code fence handling - 🔄 Fix tests expected specific error messages that don't match current implementation - ✅ Update ImportDirectiveHandler to use AST structure directly instead of string manipulation - ✅ Fix TextDirectiveValidator to use the correct error severity (Fatal) for consistency with tests - ✅ Update TextDirectiveHandler integration tests to work with the new error structure **Progress Notes**: - Successfully updated ImportDirectiveHandler to use AST structure directly - Fixed TextDirectiveValidator to use ErrorSeverity.Fatal for validation errors (previously Recoverable) - Updated TextDirectiveHandler integration tests to properly test error contexts with the new error structure - All tests for our refactored components (ImportDirectiveHandler, DefineDirectiveHandler, TextDirectiveHandler) are passing - There are still some failing tests in the codebase, but they appear to be unrelated to our refactoring **Success Criteria**: - ✅ ParserService correctly providing all needed AST functions - ✅ Services properly using AST node properties - ✅ No redundant regex for parsing where AST properties exist - 🔄 ValidationService tests passing - ✅ Code fence tests passing -- using nodes from the ast (tests may need to be edited) ### 1.2b Regex Elimination and ValidationService Fixes (3-5 days) **Goal**: Fully eliminate regex usage in production code in favor of AST-based approaches (use ParserService in prod and meld-ast in test) and fix ValidationService tests. Start by replacing tests handling of nodes with meld-ast. This will eliminate the problem we have experienced in the past where our tests have redirected Claude away from the simple, clean ast-focused interface and toward more unnecessarily complex configurations. There are some old syntax examples floating around here and there but meld-ast will guide us toward the right approach. Backward compatibility doesn't matter. We haven't shipped yet. **Tasks**: - ✅ Fix the 4 failing ValidationService tests to expect `ErrorSeverity.Fatal` instead of `ErrorSeverity.Recoverable` - ✅ Create error testing utilities to check error types and properties rather than exact messages - ✅ Update tests to use these new utilities for more resilient error testing - ✅ Eliminate regex usage in ValidationService validators (replace with AST-based validation) - ✅ Convert variable detection in VariableReferenceResolver to use AST - ✅ Fix heading detection in ResolutionService using AST properties - ✅ Update EmbedDirectiveHandler to use AST for embedded content - ✅ Fix ImportDirectiveHandler to use AST for import list parsing - ✅ Update command pattern detection in CommandResolver - ✅ Convert string concatenation and literal handling to use AST-based approaches **Implementation Order**: 1. ✅ Fix ValidationService tests first (quick win) 2. ✅ Tackle VariableReferenceResolver next (highest impact) 3. ✅ Address ValidationService validators (cleaner error messages) 4. ✅ Handle the remaining services with regex usage **Success Criteria**: - ✅ All ValidationService tests passing - ✅ No regex usage in production code for parsing where AST can be used - ✅ Error testing utilities providing resilient test assertions - ✅ VariableReferenceResolver fully converted to AST-based detection - ✅ All handlers and resolvers properly using the AST ### 1.3 Plan Review and Adjustment (0.5 days) - ✅ COMPLETE **Tasks**: - Review passing and failing tests - Document newly discovered issues - Adjust priorities for Phase 2 based on findings - Update the SHIP.md document with revised timelines ## Phase 2: Variable Resolution System (2-3 days) **Goal**: Standardize the variable resolution system to use AST-based resolution consistently. ### 2.1 Resolution System Implementation (1-2 days) - ✅ COMPLETE **Tasks**: - ✅ Refactor VariableReferenceResolver to use AST-based variable resolution - ✅ Replace regex variable extraction with parser-based resolution - ✅ Standardize variable syntax handling ({{var}} for text/data, $var for paths) - ✅ Update CommandResolver to use the standardized resolution system - ✅ Fix TextVar and DataVar resolution to properly return values instead of raw syntax - ✅ Implement proper variable interpolation within text strings -
