# `prayers/` — sources and verification notes
Internal record of where each daily prayer (nitya karma) was sourced, the
editorial normalisations applied, and the remaining soft spots. **Not** surfaced
in any user-facing field; consumers must never display content from this file.
## What this module is
Phase 10 — the short everyday shlokas a Hindu home altar uses around the day's
rhythm (morning palm-darshana, earth-vandana, pre-meal grace, evening lamp,
bedtime forgiveness) plus the two occasion-framing verses (a universal Ganesha
invocation, a closing surrender). All are ancient, anonymous/public-domain
shlokas in wide daily use. Schema: the `Prayer` type (a near-clone of `Mantra` —
single Devanagari + IAST block, `occasion` tag, no mala `recommendedCount`).
## Verification protocol
- The **Devanagari is the devotional item** and is the part held to the hard
no-AI-content rule: every prayer's Devanagari traces to a citable source
(below), never to model memory, and is cross-checked against ≥2 sources where
the verse is not already carried (verified) elsewhere in this package.
- The **IAST** is machine-generated from the Devanagari with
`@indic-transliteration/sanscript` and **round-trip-verified** (Dev→IAST→Dev
normalises back to the original) — the same bar the shipped Geeta IAST meets.
Checked in `scripts/audit-verify.cjs`. Anusvāra is the project standard `ṃ`.
- The **meaning** (en/hi) is a researched prose gloss on the kathas/puja footing
— faithful to the verse and to the cited source's own meaning, but authored,
so these ship at **draft** in the coverage tracker (like the researched
kathas), not `verified`. A human reviewer pass against a printed nitya-karma /
Gita Press prayer book is the outstanding debt.
## Editorial normalisation
Devanagari **word-spacing and daṇḍa placement are editorial**, not textual —
classical Sanskrit was written scriptio continua, and modern editions insert
word-breaks by convention. We use standard scholarly spacing; the akshara
(consonant/vowel/sandhi) stream matches the cited sources. Two specific notes:
- **Karacharana Kritam**: the cited web sources (Sanskrit Documents, GreenMesg)
print `करचरण कृतं` with a space inside what is a single compound; we write the
standard solid compound `करचरणकृतं`. Same aksharas.
- **Tvameva Mata**: rendered with anusvāra (`द्रविणं`, `सर्वं`) and `देवदेव`
joined, the form in standard published editions; one cited source used a
pada-final `म्` and a space (`द्रविणम् त्वमेव`, `देव देव`). Same phonemes.
## Per-prayer record
### `karagre-vasate-lakshmi` — morning (kara-darshana)
The palm-darshana on waking. Devanagari cross-confirmed: **GreenMesg**
(`karaagre_vasate_lakshmi`) and **Shlokam.org** (`karaagrevasate`). A ubiquitous
traditional verse; no edition disagreement on wording.
### `samudra-vasane-devi` — bath / earth (bhumi-vandana)
The pardon asked of the Earth on first treading her. Devanagari cross-confirmed:
**Sanskrit Documents** (`marathi/misc/devi.html`) and the verse as quoted in
multiple search-surfaced compilations. Standard wording, no variant of note.
### `brahmarpanam` — meal (pre-meal grace)
Bhagavad Geeta **4.24 + 15.14**, recited together as the grace before eating.
**Sourced from this package's own audited, round-trip-verified Geeta**
(`src/scriptures/bhagavad-geeta.ts`) — strongest possible provenance — with the
chapter-verse markers (`।।4.24।।`, `।।15.14।।`) dropped and the two verses joined.
The Geeta English (Shri Purohit Swami, 1935, public-domain) underlies the gloss.
### `shubham-karoti-kalyanam` — evening (deepa-darshana)
The lamp-lighting prayer. **Both** customary verses shipped (`शुभं करोति…` and
`दीपज्योतिः परब्रह्म…`), as commonly recited together. Devanagari from **GreenMesg**
(`shubham_karoti_kalyanam`); first verse cross-seen in many prayer compilations.
### `karacharana-kritam` — night (kshama-prarthana)
The forgiveness plea to Shiva (Mahadeva/Shambhu) at the close of the day or of
worship. Devanagari cross-confirmed: **Sanskrit Documents** (in the
`allshlokawmean` commonly-recited collection) and **GreenMesg**
(`shiva/kara_carana_kritam`). The two sources differ only in a pada-final nasal
(`वापराधम्` vs `वापराधं`); we take `वापराधम्` (the SD form, and the standard
pausa). `deity: 'shiva'`. A parallel Vishnu recension ends `…श्रीमन्नारायण नमोऽस्तु ते`;
we ship the Shiva form, which is the one used as a standalone daily kshama.
### `vakratunda-mahakaya` — invocation (universal Ganesha vandana)
**Sourced from this package's own `src/puja/ganesh.ts`** (the dhyana-avahana
mantra), itself noted there as a ubiquitous invariant invocation verse. IAST
identical to the puja module's (anusvāra `ṃ`). `deity: 'ganesha'`.
### `tvameva-mata` — closing (samarpana)
The verse of total surrender. Appears in the **Pandava Gita**
(`sa.wikisource.org/wiki/पाण्डव_गीता`) and in stotra/guru-stotra compilations;
Devanagari cross-confirmed against **GreenMesg** (`tvameva_mata`). No deity slot
— it addresses the divine as `देवदेव` (God of gods) and is used universally.
## Soft spots (open)
1. Human reviewer pass on the seven `meaning` glosses against a printed
nitya-karma / Gita Press prayer book — would move the rows to `verified`.
2. Several of these verses have minor regional variants (extra closing lines,
anusvāra/halanta choices). We ship the most widely-attested form and record
the variants above; a Sanskritist could confirm the preferred recension.
