GraphQL is mostly thought of in connection with Relay and React, but it was actually invented years before Relay. Facebook needed a common language to query the many different databases they managed, and out of that constraint, GraphQL was born. We will look at the technology, it's best use cases, and the state of language support for it. I will show some real world examples in Ruby/Python/Elixir/Javascript, and also talk in general about our polyglot team's explorations of the technology.
