## How Do We Use Maps?
- Show an area / features that we often times can't perceive
- Present information concsiely
- Capture spatial relationships
One object in space can be related to another.
"Feature" - points, lines, polygons
Presenting information consisely means you're leaving something out.
## Reference Maps
*General Purpose Maps*
> Location, location, location
- Overview on location of important geographic features. (e.g. cities, rivers, boundaries), landform.
- "Raw" geogrpahic data
- Multiple categories of data
- Often intricate, ornate, visually complex
"I would think of most reference maps, at least eh good ones -- as literal."
## Thematic Maps
- Focus attention on property of features, specific topics
- Interpreted and / or processed data
- Simplified and generalized
- Usually a single theme
- Visualize thematic / attribute data
- Meant to be read quickly.

## Mapping and Society
- **Data**: raw facts in bits and bytes
- **Information**: processed data
- **Knowledge**: Information combined and anyaluyzed
- **Intelligence**: Use of knowledge for action
