"Feature" - points, lines, polygons Presenting information consisely means you're leaving something out. ## Reference Maps *General Purpose Maps* > Location, location, location - Overview on location of important geographic features. (e.g. cities, rivers, boundaries), landform. - "Raw" geogrpahic data - Multiple categories of data - Often intricate, ornate, visually complex "I would think of most reference maps, at least eh good ones -- as literal." ## Thematic Maps - Focus attention on property of features, specific topics - Interpreted and / or processed data - Simplified and generalized - Usually a single theme - Visualize thematic / attribute data - Meant to be read quickly. ## Mapping and Technology - Cartogrpahy - Land Surveying - Remote Sensing - Computer Science - Information Science - Social Science ## Mapping and Society - **Data**: raw facts in bits and bytes - **Information**: processed data - **Knowledge**: Information combined and anyaluyzed - **Intelligence**: Use of knowledge for action ## Mental Map > A colorful collage. ## In Terms of Humans The physical reality does not match an externalization.
