Check for staged changes └─► No changes Exit with message "Nothing staged" 2. Get diff (git diff --cached --stat, --name-only, and full diff) 3. Analyze changes using deterministic patterns: - File types modified (*.ts, *.md, *.json, etc.) - Change magnitude (lines added/removed) - File locations (src/cli/, src/mcp/, .genie/scripts/, etc.) 4. Determine commit type: - New files "feat" - Bug fix patterns "fix" - Documentation only "docs" - Code restructuring "refactor" - Performance "perf" - Tests "test" - Build/config "build/chore" 5. Extract scope from file paths: - src/cli/ "cli" - src/mcp/ "mcp" - .genie/scripts/ "scripts" - .genie/agents/ "agents" 6. Generate subject line: - Use action verb (add, update, fix, remove, refactor) - Keep under 50 characters - No period at end 7. Generate body (if significant changes): - List key changes (bullets) - Keep lines under 72 characters - Explain "what" and "why" 8. Add footer (if applicable): - Issue references (from git branch name or context) - Breaking changes (if detected) 9. Output message ``` ## Decision Matrix ### Commit Type Selection | Pattern | Type | Example | |---------|------|---------| | New feature files | feat | Added new agent | | Fix bug patterns | fix | Corrected validation logic | | Only .md files | docs | Updated README | | Restructure code | refactor | Simplified hook logic | | Performance improvements | perf | Optimized token counting | | Only test files | test | Added unit tests | | package.json, tsconfig | build | Updated dependencies | | Scripts, hooks, config | chore | Enhanced pre-commit | ### Scope Detection | File Location | Scope | |---------------|-------| | src/cli/ | cli | | src/mcp/ | mcp | | .genie/scripts/ | scripts | | .genie/agents/ | agents | | .genie/spells/ | spells | | .genie/qa/ | qa | | Multiple locations | (omit scope) | ## Usage Examples ### Basic Usage (Pre-Commit Hook) ```bash # In pre-commit hook genie run commit-suggester --raw --quiet # Output: # feat(cli): add collective consciousness messaging # # - Rewrote 40+ user-facing messages # - Updated genie-cli.ts with lamp/collective metaphor ``` ### Manual Usage ```bash # Developer wants suggestion git add . genie run commit-suggester # See suggestion, then commit git commit -m "$(genie run commit-suggester --raw --quiet)" ``` ### JSON Output (For Tools) ```bash genie run commit-suggester --format=json # Outputs JSON for programmatic use ``` ## Integration Points **Pre-Commit Hook:** ```javascript // .genie/scripts/hooks/pre-commit.cjs const suggestion = execSync('genie run commit-suggester --raw --quiet'); if (suggestion) { fs.writeFileSync('.git/SUGGESTED_COMMIT', suggestion); console.log('📝 Suggested message saved to .git/SUGGESTED_COMMIT'); } ``` **CLI Workflow:** ```bash # User runs suggestion manually genie run commit-suggester > .git/SUGGESTED_COMMIT git commit -F .git/SUGGESTED_COMMIT ``` ## Model Selection **Use OpenCode (free, ultra-fast) when:** - Simple changes (< 100 lines) - Single file modified - Clear patterns (docs, tests, config) **Use Haiku (cheap, fast, smarter) when:** - Complex changes (> 100 lines) - Multiple files across different scopes - Unclear patterns (needs reasoning) **Decision logic:** ```javascript const complexity = calculateComplexity(diff); if (complexity < 50) { model = 'opencode'; // Free, ultra-fast } else { model = 'haiku'; // Cheap, smarter } ``` ## Error Handling **No staged changes:** ``` Error: Nothing staged to commit Hint: git add <files> first ``` **Git error:** ``` Error: Not in a git repository ``` **Model unavailable:** ``` Error: OpenCode not configured Falling back to Haiku... ``` ## Quality Standards **Generated messages must:** - Follow Conventional Commits spec - Be clear and concise - Not exceed 50 chars (subject) - Include "why" in body (if applicable) - Reference issues when detected **Do NOT:** - Generate vague messages ("update files") - Exceed character limits - Include implementation details in subject - Suggest unrelated issue references ## Related - `analyze-commit.js` helper (parse existing commits) - `commit-advisory.cjs` (validate commits) - Conventional Commits spec: https://www.conventionalcommits.org/ --- **Last Updated:** 2025-10-25 **Maintainer:** Master Genie (collective consciousness)
