It also announced improvements to its iLife suite of creative apps, with updates for iMovie and Garageband, and the introduction of iPhoto to the <a href="http://mashable.com/follow/topics/ipad/">iPad</a>. </p>
<p>The iPad previously had camera functionality and a photo library, but the addition of iPhoto brings a new level of creative image editing and organizing options that Mac owners have grown accustomed to. </p>
<p>The updated iWork apps — Pages, Numbers and Keynote — are all available today to for $9.99 apiece in the <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/genre/mobile-software-applications/id36?mt=8" target="_blank">App Store</a>. Garageband is $4.99, and all are updated versions are free for people who already own the apps. iPhoto goes for $4.99 as well, and is also available for iPhone. </p>
<p>Pages allows users to design flyers and other text-and-image based documents. Numbers helps create data visualizations, and Keynote is equivalent to the presentation slideshow manager PowerPoint.</p>
<p>Garageband — beloved by casual musicians for its simple and intuitive recording, editing and mixing capabilities — now allows users to jam with one another using the program on separate devices, which is pretty cool. Apple also introduced new iCloud features for Garageband. </p>
<p>Apps for Apple products made by the company and outside developers alike have become a massive hit since Apple’s mobile devices opened up the marketplace. The company recently announced that customers have collectively downloaded a whopping <a href="http://mashable.com/2012/03/03/app-store-25-billion-downloads/">25 billion apps</a> from the App Store — enough for every single person in the world to own three apiece. </p>

The <a href="http://www.redcross.org/portal/site/en/menuitem.94aae335470e233f6cf911df43181aa0/?vgnextoid=1cc17852264e5310VgnVCM10000089f0870aRCRD" target="_blank">Digital Operations Center</a> will equip the Red Cross to better share safety and preparedness tips during natural disasters.</p>
<p>The Red Cross hopes the new center will empower communities suffering during disasters to use social tools to seek help. </p>
<p>“We think the Digital Operations Center could have a profound impact on how we both empower communities and respond to their needs in the wake of major disasters,” Wendi Harmon, Red Cross director of social strategy, told <em>Mashable</em>.</p>
<p>The Digital Operations Center will help the Red Cross by providing additional information, aggregating public needs into trends and responding to individual’s requests in real time.</p>
<p>Along with the center’s launch, the Red Cross will now accept digital volunteers to reply to social media calls for aid. Volunteers can reply to questions such as “Where’s the nearest emergency shelter?” or “Where is the nearest food supply?” during emergency periods. The organization is also in the process of launching a certification program for online volunteers. </p>

<p>Though Harmon says the Red Cross is far from turning into an response agency that is able to reply to each individual call for help, the new digital program will enable the organization and its volunteers to give out “digital hugs.”</p>
<p>“We’re not at the point where we’re telling the public you can tweet at the Red Cross and we’ll send a sandwich truck out to feed you,” Harmon says. “But if we see 20 tweets like that, we may.” </p>
<p>The Digital Operations Center is modeled off of Dell’s <a href="http://en.community.dell.com/dell-blogs/direct2dell/b/direct2dell/archive/2010/12/08/dell-s-next-step-the-social-media-listening-command-center.aspx" target="_blank">Social Media Listening Command Center</a>, which the company uses to run their customer service. The center will monitor <a href="http://mashable.com/category/facebook/">Facebook</a>, <a href="http://mashable.com/tag/twitter/">Twitter</a>, <a href="http://mashable.com/category/youtube/">YouTube</a> and blogs, though it still doesn’t include newer social networks such as <a href="http://mashable.com/follow/topics/google-plus/">Google+</a> and <a href="http://mashable.com/follow/topics/pinterest/">Pinterest</a>.</p>
<p>At launch, the Digital Operations Center will track the term “Red Cross,” which is mentioned online 4,000 times a day (that number skyrockets at times of natural disaster). For now, the center is just in English and only functions within the U.S. </p>
<p>To accompany the center’s launch, the Red Cross has released the interactive graphic below, which shows the organization’s long tradition of embracing new technologies. An interesting past partnership with Twitter gave all Red Cross volunteers blue verification checks during Hurricane Irene in August 2011. Harmon says this proved the legitimacy of Red Cross volunteers’ advice during a time of crisis.</p>

The new model becomes available on March 16 and starts at $499. </p>
<p>Of course, not everyone will be in the market for a new iPad, for a variety of reasons. Some will cite product availability and others will cite cost as reasons to pass. <em>Mashable</em>‘s Alex Fitzpatrick recently <a href="http://mashable.com/2012/02/29/why-ipad-2/">opined</a> that he’d gladly take an iPad 2 over a new model if the price fit. But we also know that regardless, people around the world will be lined up on the day they hit stores to acquire the newest Apple creation. </p>

<p>CEO Tim Cook made his case with some of the numbers below: </p>
<ul>
<li>Apple has sold 172 million “post-PC devices,” which make up 76% of revenues. It’s not clear if this figure includes iPods.</li>
<li> There have been 25 billion downloads from Apple’s App Store.</li>
<li> There are now 100 million customers on iCloud.
<li>The App Store has 585,000 apps.</li>
<li> There are 200,000-plus iPad apps. </li>
<li> Some 15.4 million iPads were sold in Q4 2011. HP shipped 15.1 million PCs over that time; number two Lenovo shipped 13 million. </li>

It is available March 16 in black and white, powered by A5X chip (with quad-core graphics) and supports 4G LTE networks. It's 9.4 millimeters thick and 1.4 pounds.</p>
<p>Wi-Fi only iPads cost $499 for 16 GB, $599 32 GB and $699 for 64 GB, while 4G versions cost $629 for 16 GB, $729 32 GB and $829 for 64 GB. Pre-orders start today, and the devices will be in stores March 16 in these <a href="http://mashable.com/2012/03/07/new-ipad-pricing-availability/" target="_blank">10 countries</a>: U.S., UK, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Singapore and Austria.</p>
