## Classification Rules

### Production Context Over Sonic Character

**CRITICAL**: Classify releases by how they were produced and released, NOT by their sonic characteristics.

**Studio Album**: Material recorded in professional studio setting with intent for commercial release as cohesive album
- Includes: Major label albums, self-released albums, independently produced albums
- Excludes: Live recordings (even if cleaned up), demo tapes (even if high quality)

**Live Recording**: Material captured during live performance
- Includes: Concert recordings, radio sessions, festival sets
- Excludes: Studio recordings with live instrumentation, studio albums recorded "live to tape"

**Demo/Session**: Pre-production or experimental recordings not intended for commercial release
- Includes: Home recordings, practice tapes, pre-album demos, studio experiments
- Excludes: Self-released albums (even if home-recorded)

**EP/Single**: Short-form releases intended as standalone products
- EP: 3-7 tracks, typically 15-30 minutes
- Single: 1-2 tracks, promotional or commercial release

**Compilation**: Retrospective collections of previously released material
- Includes: Greatest hits, label compilations, anthology sets
- Excludes: Albums with majority new material (classify as studio albums)

**Remix/Rework**: Derivative works based on existing recordings
- Includes: Official remix albums, DJ mixes, reworked editions
- Excludes: Re-recordings (classify as studio albums)

**Bootleg/Unofficial**: Unauthorized recordings or releases
- Includes: Fan recordings, leaked demos, unauthorized live recordings
- Note: Quality or sonic character does not determine classification

### Field Test Learning: Twenty One Pilots

The Regional-era Basement Sessions and early demos posed classification challenges:

**Incorrect Approach**: Classify by sonic quality or polish
- "This demo sounds like a studio album, so I'll call it a studio album"
- "This acoustic version is intimate, so it's a different creative period"

**Correct Approach**: Classify by production context
- Basement Sessions = demos (pre-label experimental recordings)
- Acoustic versions = special collection (alternate arrangements of existing works)
- Self-titled album = studio album (independently released but intentional commercial product)

**Why This Matters**: Collectors need to distinguish official releases from unofficial material, understand artist intent, and maintain catalog coherence. Sonic character changes within eras, but production context defines release type.
