# Ralph Epic #26: Practical Examples
**Version**: 1.0.0
**Date**: 2026-02-03
**Epic**: [#26](https://git.integrolabs.net/roctinam/ai-writing-guide/issues/26)
## Overview
This document shows the Epic #26 four-layer intelligence system in action through realistic scenarios. Each example demonstrates how PID Control, Claude Intelligence, Memory, and Overseer layers work together to provide adaptive, self-managing loop behavior.
**Layer Quick Reference**:
- **Layer 1 (PID)**: Metrics + control signals + alarms
- **Layer 2 (Intelligence)**: Strategy + validation + dynamic prompts
- **Layer 3 (Memory)**: Cross-loop learning + knowledge retrieval
- **Layer 4 (Overseer)**: Health monitoring + intervention + escalation
## Example 1: Fixing Failing Tests
**Scenario**: 5 authentication tests failing after a refactor. Ralph loop should identify root cause, fix code, and verify all tests pass.
### Configuration
```javascript
await orchestrator.execute({
objective: "Fix failing authentication tests",
completionCriteria: "All tests in test/auth/** pass",
maxIterations: 10,
budgetPerIteration: 2.0,
// Standard profile - balanced for typical bug fixes
enablePIDControl: true,
pidConfig: {
initialProfile: 'standard',
adaptiveGains: true,
},
// Validation: Run tests post-iteration
validation: {
postIteration: {
checkTests: true,
testPattern: 'test/auth/**',
},
},
// Full oversight
enableOverseer: true,
enableSemanticMemory: true,
});
```
### Iteration 1: Initial Assessment
**Layer 1 - PID Control**:
```yaml
metrics:
proportional: 1.0 # 0% complete (5 tests failing)
integral: 0.0 # No accumulated error yet
derivative: 0.0 # No trend yet
gains:
profile: exploration # Early phase: low gains
kp: 0.3
ki: 0.1
kd: 0.2
control_signal: 0.3 # Low urgency early on
alarm_status: NORMAL
```
**Layer 2 - Claude Intelligence**:
```yaml
state_assessment:
estimated_progress: 0%
phase: initial_investigation
blockers:
- "5 tests failing: test_token_validation, test_password_hash, ..."
strategy:
approach: investigate
reasoning: "First iteration - need to understand test failures"
priorities:
- "Read test output and identify failure patterns"
- "Check test files for common cause"
- "Review recent refactor changes"
prompt_generated:
urgency: normal
focus_areas:
- "Analyze test failure messages"
- "Locate authentication module changes"
- "Identify root cause"
tool_suggestions: [Bash, Grep, Read]
```
**Layer 3 - Memory**:
```yaml
retrieved_knowledge:
strategies:
- type: strategy
content: "For test fixes, start with test file to understand expectations"
confidence: 0.85
success_rate: 0.80
source_loops: [ralph-005, ralph-012]
antipatterns:
- type: antipattern
content: "Don't modify tests to pass - fix the code being tested"
confidence: 0.95
estimates:
- type: estimate
content: "Test fixes typically take 2-3 iterations"
confidence: 0.70
```
**Layer 4 - Overseer**:
```yaml
health_check:
status: healthy
detections: []
interventions: []
message: "Loop started, monitoring for pathologies"
```
**Iteration 1 Output**:
Claude analyzes test output, identifies that token validation is failing because the refactor changed the token signing algorithm but tests still expect the old format.
### Iteration 2: First Fix Attempt
**Layer 1 - PID Control**:
```yaml
metrics:
proportional: 0.8 # 20% complete (4/5 tests now pass)
integral: 1.8 # Accumulated: 1.0 + 0.8
derivative: -0.2 # Improving (was 1.0, now 0.8)
gains:
profile: focused # Phase advanced, use focused gains
kp: 0.5
ki: 0.2
kd: 0.3
control_signal: 0.54 # (0.5×0.8) + (0.2×1.8) + (0.3×-0.2) = 0.54
alarm_status: NORMAL
trend: improving
```
**Layer 2 - Claude Intelligence**:
```yaml
state_assessment:
estimated_progress: 20%
phase: iterative_fixing
blockers:
- "1 test still failing: test_password_hash"
strategy:
approach: persist
reasoning: "Making good progress (1 of 5 fixed), continue current approach"
priorities:
- "Fix remaining test_password_hash failure"
- "Verify no regressions in passing tests"
validation:
```
**Iteration 2 Output**:
Claude fixes the token validation issue. Now 4 tests pass, but `test_password_hash` still fails due to unrelated bcrypt salt issue.
### Iteration 3: Addressing Edge Case
**Layer 1 - PID Control**:
```yaml
metrics:
proportional: 0.6 # 40% complete (now addressing password hash)
integral: 2.3 # Accumulated: 1.8 + 0.5 (decay applied)
derivative: -0.2 # Still improving
gains:
profile: focused
kp: 0.5
ki: 0.2
kd: 0.3
control_signal: 0.61
alarm_status: NORMAL
```
**Layer 2 - Validation**:
```yaml
pre_iteration_validation:
passed: true
issues: []
post_iteration_validation:
tests_run: 5
tests_passed: 5
```
**Layer 4 - Overseer**:

```
**Iteration 3 Output**:
Claude fixes bcrypt salt configuration. All 5 tests now pass.
## Key Patterns Demonstrated
### PID Control Adaptation
- **Early phase** uses exploration gains (low Kp, low Ki)
- **Mid phase** uses focused gains (balanced)
- **Plateau** triggers aggressive gains (high Kp)
- **Stuck** triggers recovery gains (maximum Kp, negative Kd)
- **Near completion** returns to cautious (high Kd)
### Memory Learning
- **Strategies** promoted when confidence > 0.6 and success rate > 0.7
- **Antipatterns** promoted when repeated failures observed
- **Estimates** refined over multiple loops
- **Conventions** captured from project-specific patterns
### Overseer Interventions
- **LOG**: Normal operation, informational
- **WARN**: Slowdown, stagnation (non-blocking)
- **REDIRECT**: Stuck, oscillation (inject guidance)
- **PAUSE**: Critical issues, human needed
- **ABORT**: Fatal errors, impossible to continue
### Strategy Pivots
- **Persist**: Continue when making good progress
- **Pivot**: Change approach when stuck or regressing
- **Decompose**: Break into smaller steps when overwhelmed
- **Escalate**: Request human when uncertain
## Configuration Recommendations
Based on these examples:
| Task Type | PID Profile | Validation | Overseer Strictness | Expected Iterations |
|-----------|-------------|------------|---------------------|---------------------|
| **Bug fixes** | Standard | Tests | Medium | 2-5 |
| **Refactoring** | Cautious | Tests + Build | High | 5-15 |
| **Security** | Conservative | Tests + Scan | High | 3-8 |
| **Features** | Standard | Tests | Medium | 5-12 |
| **Docs** | Aggressive | Minimal | Low | 2-6 |
| **Coverage** | Standard → Aggressive | Coverage | Medium | 10-20 |
