# Strongly-typed TypeScript Fetch Browser API generator for OpenAPI Generator Plus An [OpenAPI Generator Plus](https://github.com/karlvr/openapi-generator-plus) template for a TypeScript API client using Fetch in a Browser with support for multiple strongly-typed responses. This client generator supercedes the [typescript-fetch-client-generator](../typescript-fetch-client) For an API client to use in Node applications, see [typescript-fetch-node-client-generator](../typescript-fetch-node-client). ## Using See the [OpenAPI Generator Plus](https://github.com/karlvr/openapi-generator-plus) documentation for how to use generator templates. ### Configuring the Generated API Client The generated API client has several options you can configure including the base URI, fetch function, and authentication information. There are several different ways to change this configuration: 1. Using `setDefaultConfiguration(...)` allows you to change the default configuration used when no overriding configuration is provided. 2. `withConfiguration(...)` for either a specific endpoint group, or the entire API. The resulting API client uses the provided configuration over the default, and can be useful when you need to override the default configuration for specific groups of endpoints: ```ts import { withConfiguration } from './generated-client/api/admin' const adminConfiguration = new Configuration({ apiKey: 'MY_ADMIN_API_KEY' }) const adminApi = withConfiguration(adminConfiguration) /* Uses adminConfiguration */ const response = await adminApi.getDetails() ``` > [!NOTE] > This prevents the configured API/group from being tree shaken, which can result in unused > endpoints being included in your built JS. Read more about this in the > [Tree Shaking](#tree-shaking) section below. 3. Overriding configuration on a per-endpoint basis can be done by passing a configuration object as the final parameter to an endpoint functions. This configuration is used instead of the default configuration. ### Error Handling The generated endpoints enforce that your application can handle all errors returned by your API through [discriminated response types](https://www.typescriptlang.org/docs/handbook/2/narrowing.html#discriminated-unions) on the `status` field. In addition to the responses defined in your OpenAPI specification, there are two other response types: | `status` | Meaning | |----------------|---------| | `'undocumented'` | The response contained an HTTP status code, or `Content-Type` not defined in your OpenAPI specification. | | `'error'` | An error was thrown in the generated endpoint. This could be due to a network error, a malformed response, a missing required parameter, etc. | > [!TIP] > We provide [type guards](https://www.typescriptlang.org/docs/handbook/2/narrowing.html#using-type-predicates) > that can be used to differentiate between documented and unexpected responses: > ```ts > if (isDocumentedResponse(response)) { > // This response is defined in your OpenAPI specification! > } > if (isUnexpectedResponse(response)) { > // This response is either a `UndocumentedResponse` or `FetchErrorResponse`. > } > ``` ### Tree Shaking If you're not using every endpoint in your API, [tree shaking](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary/Tree_shaking) is a useful tool that bundlers employ to remove unused code from the resulting JavaScript. For the best tree shaking when using the generated API client, it is recommended to import the endpoints directly from their respective files: ```ts // All other endpoints in this file wont be included in the resulting bundle. import { getDetails } from './generated-client/api/admin' ``` If you import the API group from the default import, from the index file, or `withConfiguration` for a specific API group, then every endpoint in the group will be bundled into your JavaScript. See Customising below.|`undefined`| ## Customising This generator supports a `customTemplates` config file property to specify a directory containing Handlebars templates that will be used to override built-in templates. Any custom template will have the original template available as a partial named by prefixing the template name with `original`, and then upper-casing the first letter, e.g. `originalModelEnum`. Some of the templates in the generator are designed to support overriding for custom requirements. Please inspect the templates in the `templates` directory.
