import * as React from 'react'; import { Radio } from '@base-ui/react/radio'; import { RadioGroup } from '@base-ui/react/radio-group'; export default function ExampleRadioGroup() { const id = React.useId(); return ( <RadioGroup aria-labelledby={id} defaultValue="fuji-apple" className="flex flex-col items-start gap-1 text-neutral-950 dark:text-white" > <div className="text-sm font-bold" id={id}> Best apple </div> <label className="flex items-center gap-2 text-sm font-normal text-neutral-950 dark:text-white"> <Radio.Root value="fuji-apple" className="flex size-4 shrink-0 items-center justify-center border rounded-full p-0 border-neutral-950 bg-white text-white dark:border-white dark:bg-neutral-950 dark:text-neutral-950 data-checked:bg-neutral-950 data-checked:text-white dark:data-checked:bg-white dark:data-checked:text-neutral-950 focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:outline-neutral-950 dark:focus-visible:outline-white" > <Radio.Indicator className="flex items-center justify-center data-unchecked:hidden before:size-2 before:rounded-full before:bg-current" /> </Radio.Root> Fuji </label> <label className="flex items-center gap-2 text-sm font-normal text-neutral-950 dark:text-white"> <Radio.Root value="gala-apple" className="flex size-4 shrink-0 items-center justify-center border rounded-full p-0 border-neutral-950 bg-white text-white dark:border-white dark:bg-neutral-950 dark:text-neutral-950 data-checked:bg-neutral-950 data-checked:text-white dark:data-checked:bg-white dark:data-checked:text-neutral-950 focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:outline-neutral-950 dark:focus-visible:outline-white" > <Radio.Indicator className="flex items-center justify-center data-unchecked:hidden before:size-2 before:rounded-full before:bg-current" /> </Radio.Root> Gala </label> <label className="flex items-center gap-2 text-sm font-normal text-neutral-950 dark:text-white"> <Radio.Root value="granny-smith-apple" className="flex size-4 shrink-0 items-center justify-center border rounded-full p-0 border-neutral-950 bg-white text-white dark:border-white dark:bg-neutral-950 dark:text-neutral-950 data-checked:bg-neutral-950 data-checked:text-white dark:data-checked:bg-white dark:data-checked:text-neutral-950 focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:outline-neutral-950 dark:focus-visible:outline-white" > <Radio.Indicator className="flex items-center justify-center data-unchecked:hidden before:size-2 before:rounded-full before:bg-current" /> </Radio.Root> Granny Smith </label> </RadioGroup> ); } ``` ### CSS Modules This example shows how to implement the component using CSS Modules. ```css /* index.module.css */ .RadioGroup { display: flex; flex-direction: column; align-items: start; gap: 0.25rem; color: oklch(14.5% 0 0deg); @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) { color: white; } } .Caption { font-size: 0.875rem; line-height: 1.25rem; font-weight: 700; } .Item { display: flex; align-items: center; gap: 0.5rem; font-size: 0.875rem; line-height: 1.25rem; font-weight: 400; } .Radio { box-sizing: border-box; display: flex; flex-shrink: 0; width: 1rem; height: 1rem; align-items: center; justify-content: center; border: 1px solid oklch(14.5% 0 0deg); border-radius: 100%; background-color: white; color: white; padding: 0; margin: 0; @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) { border: 1px solid white; background-color: oklch(14.5% 0 0deg); color: oklch(14.5% 0 0deg); } &[data-checked] { background-color: oklch(14.5% 0 0deg); color: white; @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) { background-color: white; color: oklch(14.5% 0 0deg); } } &:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid oklch(14.5% 0 0deg); outline-offset: 2px; @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) { outline-color: white; } } } .Indicator { display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; &[data-unchecked] { display: none; } &::before { content: ''; border-radius: 100%; width: 0.5rem; height: 0.5rem; background-color: currentcolor; } } ``` ```tsx /* index.tsx */ 'use client'; import * as React from 'react'; import { Radio } from '@base-ui/react/radio'; import { RadioGroup } from '@base-ui/react/radio-group'; import styles from './index.module.css'; export default function ExampleRadioGroup() { const id = React.useId(); return ( <RadioGroup aria-labelledby={id} defaultValue="fuji-apple" className={styles.RadioGroup}> <div className={styles.Caption} id={id}> Best apple </div> <label className={styles.Item}> <Radio.Root value="fuji-apple" className={styles.Radio}> <Radio.Indicator className={styles.Indicator} /> </Radio.Root> Fuji </label> <label className={styles.Item}> <Radio.Root value="gala-apple" className={styles.Radio}> <Radio.Indicator className={styles.Indicator} /> </Radio.Root> Gala </label> <label className={styles.Item}> <Radio.Root value="granny-smith-apple" className={styles.Radio}> <Radio.Indicator className={styles.Indicator} /> </Radio.Root> Granny Smith </label> </RadioGroup> ); } ``` ## Usage guidelines - **Form controls must have an accessible name**: It can be created using `<label>` elements, or the `Field` and `Fieldset` components. See [Labeling a radio group](/react/components/radio.md) and the [forms guide](/react/handbook/forms.md). ## Anatomy Radio is always placed within Radio Group. Import the components and place them together: ```jsx title="Anatomy" import { Radio } from '@base-ui/react/radio'; import { RadioGroup } from '@base-ui/react/radio-group'; <RadioGroup> <Radio.Root> <Radio.Indicator /> </Radio.Root> </RadioGroup>; ``` ## Examples ### Labeling a radio group Label the group with `aria-labelledby` and a sibling label element: ```tsx title="Using aria-labelledby to label a radio group" <div id="storage-type-label">Storage type</div> <RadioGroup aria-labelledby="storage-type-label">{/* ... */}</RadioGroup> ``` An enclosing `<label>` is the simplest labeling pattern for each radio: ```tsx title="Using an enclosing label to label a radio button" // @highlight <label> <Radio.Root value="ssd" /> SSD {/* @highlight */} </label> ``` ### Rendering as a native button By default, `<Radio.Root>` renders a `<span>` element to support enclosing labels. Prefer rendering each radio as a native button when using sibling labels (`htmlFor`/`id`). ```tsx title="Sibling label pattern with a native button" <div id="storage-type">Storage type</div> <RadioGroup defaultValue="ssd" aria-labelledby="storage-type"> <div> <label htmlFor="storage-type-ssd">SSD</label> {/* @highlight-text "nativeButton" "render={<button />}" */} <Radio.Root value="ssd" id="storage-type-ssd" nativeButton render={<button />}> <Radio.Indicator /> </Radio.Root> </div> </RadioGroup> ``` Native buttons with wrapping labels are supported by using the `render` callback to avoid invalid HTML, so the hidden input is placed outside the label: ```tsx title="Render callback" <div id="storage-type">Storage type</div> <RadioGroup defaultValue="ssd" aria-labelledby="storage-type"> <Radio.Root value="ssd" nativeButton // @highlight-start render={(buttonProps) => ( <label> <button {...buttonProps} /> SSD </label> )} {/* @highlight-end */} /> </RadioGroup> ``` ### Form integration Use [Field](/react/components/field.md) and [Fieldset](/react/components/fieldset.md) for group labeling and form integration: ```tsx title="Using Radio Group in a form" <Form> {/* @highlight */} <Field.Root name="storageType"> <Fieldset.Root render={<RadioGroup />}> <Fieldset.Legend>Storage type</Fieldset.Legend> <Field.Item> <Field.Label> <Radio.Root value="ssd" /> SSD </Field.Label> </Field.Item> <Field.Item> <Field.Label> <Radio.Root value="hdd" /> HDD </Field.Label> </Field.Item> </Fieldset.Root> </Field.Root> </Form> ``` ## API reference ### RadioGroup ### RadioGroup Provides a shared state to a series of radio buttons.
