## Demo
### Tailwind
This example shows how to implement the component using Tailwind CSS.
```tsx
/* index.tsx */
import { Input } from '@base-ui/react/input';
export default function ExampleInput() {
return (
<label className="flex flex-col items-start gap-1 text-sm font-bold text-neutral-950 dark:text-white">
Name
<Input
placeholder="e.g. Colm Tuite"
className="h-8 w-40 border border-neutral-950 dark:border-white bg-white dark:bg-neutral-950 px-2 text-sm any-pointer-coarse:text-base font-normal text-neutral-950 dark:text-white placeholder:text-neutral-500 dark:placeholder:text-neutral-400 focus:outline-2 focus:-outline-offset-1 focus:outline-neutral-950 dark:focus:outline-white"
/>
</label>
);
}
```
### CSS Modules
This example shows how to implement the component using CSS Modules.
```css
/* index.module.css */
.Label {
display: flex;
flex-direction: column;
align-items: flex-start;
gap: 0.25rem;
font-size: 0.875rem;
line-height: 1.25rem;
font-weight: 700;
color: oklch(14.5% 0 0deg);
@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) {
color: white;
}
}
.Input {
box-sizing: border-box;
padding: 0 0.5rem;
margin: 0;
border-radius: 0;
border: 1px solid oklch(14.5% 0 0deg);
width: 10rem;
height: 2rem;
font-family: inherit;
font-size: 0.875rem;
line-height: 1.25rem;
font-weight: 400;
background-color: white;
color: oklch(14.5% 0 0deg);
@media (any-pointer: coarse) {
font-size: 1rem;
line-height: 1.5rem;
}
@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) {
border: 1px solid white;
background-color: oklch(14.5% 0 0deg);
color: white;
}
&::placeholder {
color: oklch(55.6% 0 0deg);
@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) {
color: oklch(70.8% 0 0deg);
}
}
&:focus {
outline: 2px solid oklch(14.5% 0 0deg);
outline-offset: -1px;
@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) {
outline-color: white;
}
}
}
```
```tsx
/* index.tsx */
import { Input } from '@base-ui/react/input';
import styles from './index.module.css';
export default function ExampleInput() {
return (
<label className={styles.Label}>
Name
<Input placeholder="e.g. Colm Tuite" className={styles.Input} />
</label>
);
}
```
## Usage guidelines
- **Form controls must have an accessible name**: It can be created using a `<label>` element or the `Field` component. See the [forms guide](/react/handbook/forms.md).
## Anatomy
Import the component and use it as a single part:
```jsx title="Anatomy"
import { Input } from '@base-ui/react/input';
<Input />;
```
## API reference
### Input
A native input element that automatically works with [Field](https://base-ui.com/react/components/field).
Renders an `<input>` element.
**Input Props:**
| Prop | Type | Default | Description |
| :------------ | :---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :------ | :-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| defaultValue | `string \| number \| string[]` | - | The default value of the input. Use when uncontrolled. |
| value | `string \| string[] \| number` | - | The value of the input. Use when controlled. |
| onValueChange | `((value: string, eventDetails: Input.ChangeEventDetails) => void)` | - | Callback fired when the `value` changes. Use when controlled. |
| className | `string \| ((state: Input.State) => string \| undefined)` | - | CSS class applied to the element, or a function that
returns a class based on the component's state. |
| style | `React.CSSProperties \| ((state: Input.State) => React.CSSProperties \| undefined)` | - | Style applied to the element, or a function that
returns a style object based on the component's state. |
| render | `ReactElement \| ((props: HTMLProps, state: Input.State) => ReactElement)` | - | Allows you to replace the component's HTML element
with a different tag, or compose it with another component. Accepts a `ReactElement` or a function that returns the element to render. |
**Input Data Attributes:**
| Attribute | Type | Description |
| :------------ | :--- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| data-disabled | - | Present when the input is disabled. |
| data-valid | - | Present when the input is in a valid state (when wrapped in Field.Root). |
| data-invalid | - | Present when the input is in an invalid state (when wrapped in Field.Root). |
| data-dirty | - | Present when the input's value has changed (when wrapped in Field.Root). |
| data-touched | - | Present when the input has been touched (when wrapped in Field.Root). |
| data-filled | - | Present when the input is filled (when wrapped in Field.Root). |
| data-focused | - | Present when the input is focused (when wrapped in Field.Root). |
### Input.Props
Re-export of [Input](/react/components/input.md) props.
### Input.State

/** Whether the component should ignore user interaction. */
disabled: boolean;
/** Whether the field has been touched. */
touched: boolean;

dirty: boolean;
/** Whether the field is valid. */
valid: boolean | null;
/** Whether the field has a value. */
filled: boolean;
/** Whether the field is focused. */
focused: boolean;
};
```
### Input.ChangeEventReason
```typescript
type InputChangeEventReason = 'none';
```
### Input.ChangeEventDetails
```typescript
type InputChangeEventDetails = {
/** The reason for the event. */
reason: 'none';
/** The native event associated with the custom event. */
event: Event;
/** Cancels Base UI from handling the event. */
cancel: () => void;
/** Allows the event to propagate in cases where Base UI will stop the propagation. */
allowPropagation: () => void;
/** Indicates whether the event has been canceled. */
isCanceled: boolean;
/** Indicates whether the event is allowed to propagate. */
isPropagationAllowed: boolean;
